Fassfern, June–July 2008
Thursday 26 June
A leisurely drive from Leeds to Teesdale, and on past Glasgow to Arrochar, where I spent a couple of nights at the Lochside Guest House on the shores of Loch Long.
Barnard Castle (what's left of it).
High Force, Teesdale.
The view from the Lochside Guest House: the distinctive silhouette of The Cobbler behind the slopes of Beinn Narnain.
Friday 27 June
Set out to climb Beinn Narnain and Beinn Ime, but gave up after doing the first of these as the weather deteriorated.
Arrochar seen across Loch Long from the lower slopes of Beinn Narnain. The arrow is there to indicate the location of the Lochside Guest House (and also to show off my HTML/Javascript programming skills).
Higher up Beinn Narnain, looking down Loch Long towards the open sea.
Elegant stone trig point on the top of Beinn Narnain.
On the way down from Beinn Narnain, the cloud briefly lifted to give a glimpse of The Cobbler.
Creative use of an old tree stump: the beautifully carved eagle points the way to a lochside picnic area.
Saturday 28 June
Drove around parts of Argyll before heading up to Fassfern House on Loch Eil, where I spent a week with "the usual suspects".
The old military road in Glen Croe, from the viewpoint at Rest and be Thankful.
The fishing harbour at the little village of Lochgoilhead (at the head of Loch Goil).
Sunday 29 June
Walked along the shore of Loch Shiel to Sgurr Ghiubhsachain, which we climbed. The day started out fine and sunny, but that didn't last long. Low cloud, rain, hail and a ferocious wind prevented photography. Allan and Eric went on to climb Sgorr Craobh a' Chaorainn, but the rest of us were content to make do with Sgurr Ghiubhsachain, returning along the valley of the Allt na Cruaiche.

Loch Shiel, looking towards Glenfinnan, from the slopes of Sgurr Ghiubhsachain.
Monday 30 June
Weather still bad. Went for a forest walk in the woods around Fassfern House in the morning. Watched Wimbledon on the television in the afternoon. No photos.
Tuesday 1 July
Still wet. Drove up Glen Nevis and walked as far as the bridge at Steall.
Water cascading down the Allt Coire a' Mhail at Steall, after heavy overnight rain.
Eric crossing the bridge.
Kate about to hop across a swollen burn on the path from Steall.
