Japan, March–April 2007
Friday 6 April
Visited two gardens in Tokyo in the morning: Koishikawa Koraku-en and Happo-en. Lunch at the Senso-ji temple complex (a tourist-infested nightmare where I took no pictures). Then a trip down the Sumida River to Hamarikyu Onshi Park.
The lake at Koishikawa Koraku-en Gardens.
A former paddy field converted into a bed of irises. (The irises are obviously not yet in bloom, nor are the wistarias over the trellises.)
Wolfgang, cheery as ever.
Bonsai at Happo-en.
Mary in a lakeside shelter at Happo-en. The garden here was one of the most attractive and peaceful of all those that we visited.
Blossom trees on the banks of the Sumida River.
Saturday 7 April
A disappointingly overcast and misty day for the excursion to Lake Ashi, where we were hoping for good views of Mt Fuji.
A brief glimpse from Onshi Hakone Park of snow-covered Mt Fuji between two layers of cloud, before the mist rolled over.
A lakeside shrine.
We went by cable car up Mt Komigatake, where instead of seeing Mt Fuji we had this misty view back to Onshi Hakone Park.
Snapshot taken from the coach on the way back to Tokyo. The hillside above the town is dotted with cherry trees in bloom.
