In 1997, Steve and Jo bought Lagar Sovanes, a small farmhouse in the Montes de Málaga, with 5 1/2 hectares (12 acres) of olive and almond trees. When Steve moved in, in the autumn of 1997 the house was in a state of near ruin, and when Jo joined him after Christmas that year, it still wasn't much better. In the following four years they carefully renovated it in the traditional local style, before selling it and moving further west.

They ran the farm on organic permaculture lines, with terraced vegetable gardens irrigated by runoff from the bathroom, washing machine and kitchen sinks.

The house is situated in a spectacular position on the shoulder of a hillside with beautiful distant views, but is within 40 minutes' drive of Málaga airport, and is only 20 minutes' drive from the market town of Colmenar.
